About us

      Seeds and Planting materials are the foundation of healthy crops which ensure the good harvest and the Department of Agriculture developed and introduced variety of Seeds and Planting materials to farmers to make this task a success through its Research and Development units. Over the years, farmers have learnt to trust seeds and planting material produced by the In order to fulfil the above responsibility it operates several programmes through the regional centres and in the government seed production farms belongs to the division.

   With the increasing demand for quality seeds & planting materials, it was inevitable to encourage the private sector participation in seed production along with the government farms. Private sector involvement was further strengthen by the National Seed Policy (NSP) which was declared in 1996 with the objective of ensuring the farmers to gain access to high quality seeds and plating materials through establishing viable seed enterprises.

   Seed and Planting Material Development Centre is the pioneer institute responsible for the production of seeds and planting materials to meet the national requirement.
